Strong storms leave trail of damage across Central Florida

Wind, lightning, flooding rains leave mark in neighborhoods

ORLANDO, Fla. – A powerful combination of wind, lightning, and flooding rains left a mark Thursday on Central Florida.

In Tavares, at the Little Lake Harris Shores community, wind ripped apart the roof to the neighborhood clubhouse.

"I figured there was a big storm, but it looked like a tornado or something here. They were saying straight line winds maybe," said Jimmy Berube, who inspected the damage to his local clubhouse. "I guess it's lucky nobody lives in this, just the clubhouse for the neighborhood."

Residents were not injured and nobody was inside when the storm hit around 4 o'clock, sending debris across the neighborhood.

The storm left and spared other homes in Tavares, but elsewhere, it packed a wallop.

In Rockledge in Brevard County off Interstate 95, lightning hit a power line that burst into flames around 3 p.m. Traffic was diverted at Barnes Boulevard/Fiske Boulevard exit from I-95, for 30 minutes while they waited for FLorida Power and Light to cut power to a line.

And in Apopka, winds knocked this tree into a house full of people.

"Big sound, like it hit the roof and it kind of shaked," said Juan Santana. "I had to make sure my dad was ok because he was right there."

His father was sleeping in the corner room of their house off Rolling Green Drive when they heard a bang and found the tree leaning with all its weight on their roof.

No one was injured, but the family now worries about the damage they can't see and will spend the night checking for leaks -- hoping no more rain hits overnight.

"If it's gonna keep raining and keeps leaking, we're going to get everything messed up inside," said Santana.
