Teen lying in bed shot in head during drive-by in Sanford, police say

16-year-old taken to hospital in stable condition

SANFORD, Fla. – A 16-year-old lying in bed was shot in the head late Sunday when someone fired several shots, one of which traveled through the bedroom window of his Sanford home, police said.

The shooting was reported at 100 Little Fox Avenue east of State Road 417. Several bullets struck the house and a vehicle outside the home.

The victim, Shaun Merrill Jr., was taken to a hospital in stable condition, Sanford police said.

The teen's father, Shaun Merrill Sr., said he was asleep when he heard the gunshots.

"I looked at (my son's) head, I see blood by his pillow and stuff, (and) that's how I knew he had got hit," Merrill Sr. said. "I guess the window and the headboard really slowed the impact down from it."

Merrill Sr. said he doesn't know who targeted his home.

"(My son) doesn't know nothing about the street life," Merrill Sr. said.

"We are saddened to learn that one of our Winter Springs High School students has been shot early this morning in a non-school related incident. Our thoughts are with the student's family, friends and loved ones at this time. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery. A grief counselor will be available at the school today for any students or staff as needed," school district officials said in a statement.

Police obtained video surveillance from a house across the street from the home. Officers said they could see two vehicles pass in front of the home. One drove past slowly, the report said. The other one stopped in front of the house.

A description of the shooter or the vehicle is not known. An investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Sanford police.
