Lightning strikes — a positive note? Hey there Insiders! It’s meteorologist Samara Cokinos here with you. Yes, I said positive news and lightning all in the same sentence.
Check this out. Last year was reported as the second-lowest year for lightning deaths since 2001.
These numbers show that the Lightning Safety Awareness campaign is really having an impact in the United States. Of course, one death is too many, so we still have some work to do. Central Floridians are no strangers to thunderstorms rumbling across the area but have you ever heard of the phenomenon thundersnow? Hey everyone, meteorologist Michelle Morgan here talking about thundersnow and believe it or not, I experienced it only once in my life while living in Richmond, VA.
It was the coolest thing ever! I remember the heavy snow falling, the winds howling and then out of nowhere, pop! A bright flash illuminated the area while the heavy snow was falling and that’s when I realized, I just experienced thundersnow.
