Spring is in the air and these shows are on the stage

Setting The Stage (wkmg)

Technically Tuesday is the first day of spring, but I’m sure your allergies are already feeling it.

Thank you for opening this “Setting The Stage” newsletter, I’m News 6 Producer Brooke Savage.

I took the picture above last spring in California when they had their big superbloom. Art can be found in nature too.

OK, enough about the flowers, here’s what’s happening in the theatre world.

🎶 This musical opening tonight will make you feel like you’re on Broadway in New York

“42nd Street” features Broadway hits, while also capturing the golden age of performing and musical theater. (Waylon Lemasters)

Set in New York in the 1930s during the height of the Great Depression, “42nd Street” follows chorus girl Peggy Sawyer and her rise to fame overnight. She arrives at the Big Apple from Allentown, Pennsylvania, and lands her first big role in the ensemble of a new Broadway show. Just before opening night, the show’s leading lady, Dorothy Brock, breaks her ankle, and that’s when Sawyer steps in. You can catch “42nd Street” at Osceola Arts starting tonight through March 31. I spoke to the women playing Peggy Sawyer and Dorothy Brock about what it takes to play their roles, what you can expect from the show, and I posted ticket information.

✨ Speaking of the magic of Broadway, these shows are coming to the space coast

Chase Wolfe and Ellie Baker in "Pretty Woman: The Musical." (Matthew Murphy for MurphyMade)

King Center in Melbourne announced its 2024-2025 Broadway season earlier this week! The shows include “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Annie,” “Come From Away,” and “Pretty Woman: The Musical.” I posted all of the details on the show dates and what the musicals are about.

🎟 Tickets are on sale now to see Weezer in Orlando

More than two decades after their debut, Weezer is now on their 10th studio album, which also happens to be the fourth self-titled of their career so far. Known by fans as "The White Album" due to its cover featuring a washed out photo of the band on a California beach, the album was released on April 1, 2016. The band (from left to right: Scott Shriner, Brian Bell, Rivers Cuomo and Patrick Wilson) is seen here in July 2015. Founding member and bassist Matt Sharp, seen on the previous cover of the band's 1994 debut, quit the band in 1998 and was replaced briefly by Mikey Welsh. After Welsh suffered a mental breakdown and left the band in 2001 (he would later die in 2011 from a suspected drug overdose leading to a heart attack), Shriner joined the band and is now Weezer's longest serving bass guitarist. California rock band, Weezer, is celebrating 30 years with a North American tour, and one of the stops will be in Orlando in September. Weezer will perform with The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. at the Kia Center on Friday, Sept. 20. Tickets went on sale to the general public this morning.

🎤 You, you, you, oughta know!!!

The Company of the North American Tour of "Jagged Little Pill." (Evan Zimmerman for MurphyMade)

The U.S. tour of the Broadway show, “Jagged Little Pill The Musical” is coming to the Doctor Phillips Center on Tuesday. The musical is based on Alanis Morissette’s best-selling album in the mid-90s. Click here for ticket information and what the whole show is about.

"Vida" is an immersive show representing the different stages of life and the emotions that come with them. (Open Scene)

A show taking you on an immersive and captivating musical journey, celebrating the ups and downs of life will make its debut in Central Florida. You can catch “Vida” at Orlando Fringe’s Fringe ArtSpace in downtown Orlando starting next Friday. I had the chance to hear from the show’s creator and producer, they really captured what you can expect from the show and its message about life.
