Summer is here! ☀️

ORLANDO, Fla. – Hey there Insiders, meteorologist Michelle Morgan here talking about the science behind the first day of summer.

Well, for us Floridians, we have been feeling the “summer” heat for months now. In fact, we closed May being the hottest ever on record. Yikes! But the summer season officially begins June 20.

Did you also know that today, at 4:51 p.m. EDT, we’re hitting the peak of sunlight for the year? Orlando will be soaking up around 14 hours of daylight!

Here’s the cool part: the Earth isn’t upright as it orbits the sun — it’s tilted about 23.5 degrees. This tilt is the reason we have seasons. When the Northern Hemisphere leans closest to the sun, voila, it’s the summer solstice! Click here to read more.

🦗Ever hear of a cricket thermometer?🌡️

Opening your windows to hear crickets chirping can be one of the calmest sounds of summer, especially after a long hot day. Did you know those chirps can actually be used to predict the temperature outside? Hey there Insiders! It’s meteorologist Samara Cokinos back to talk about another wild insect moment with you. Yes, it’s true, a cricket’s chirp can be used to predict the temperature. The wild part is that it’s surprisingly accurate.

Some tropical terms to know

What’s an Invest? What’s a Potential Tropical Cyclone? What’s going on, guys — meteorologist Jonathan Kegges with you. This past week we have had our first invest and potential tropical cyclone of the season.

The terms are a little weird, but if you like following the weather to just want to stay updated, they are important designations to know. Here’s what happens when an Invest is designated by the National Hurricane Center.

A potential tropical cyclone is a fairly new designation. Essentially, the storm isn’t yet meteorologically tropical, but it has the potential to be one soon and impact land. Here’s what it means if you see these pop up.
