Cutting through the election noise

The deluge is upon us.

With one political convention done, another on the way, the fate of the Democratic Party’s nominee uncertain, and the Florida primary around the corner, there’s a lot going on.

I’m here to help.

Hey guys, Christie Zizo back with another Election Results newsletter, and bringing you the latest Results 2024 news and resources.

I know what you’re thinking, it already feels like a flood of political news and commentary right now, with more commentary than news.

At News 6, we’re trying to cut through all the noise and focus on the basics — what you need to make an informed decision.

We are asking you to tell us what issues are informing your votes in the next two elections. We’re going to use that to guide our stories and questions for candidates in our races to watch.

We’ve already gotten some viewer responses — many of you are focused on border security, the economy, and abortion. But what about local issues? How will you be voting for state lawmakers and county and city government officials?

Tell us what local issues matter to you. We have a form you can fill out HERE.

August election deadline is Monday. Why you may want to change your voter registration

Florida is holding an election on Tuesday, Aug. 20. The deadline to register to vote, or to update your voter registration is Monday, July 22. You can register to vote, check your voter status, or update your registration at the Florida government website, RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov.

There will be elections on the ballot for all levels of government, and while there will be primaries available only to party members, there will also be nonpartisan elections for school board races, judges, and in some counties, city and government positions.

There are also several universal party primaries now open to all voters because there are no other candidates, four in Orange County alone.

Still, for voters in some counties, you may want to consider joining a party.

That is because there are several races that would be open to all voters, except there is a write-in candidate. For instance, the Brevard County supervisor of elections race and the county tax collector race will only be open to Republican voters in August. The winners will face the write-in candidate in November, assuming that candidate stays in the race.

It’s the same situation in Sumter County, where all three county commission races have only Republicans and one write-in candidate running. So only Republicans will have a real say in what happens in those races.

If you want to change your party registration, all you have to do is go to RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov and do so. But you must do it by the end of the day Monday, July 22.

Everything you need to know to update your registration or help someone register to vote can be found HERE.

Where to meet the candidates

You can research the candidates on your ballot online, but sometimes it’s better to just meet them and ask them your questions.

There are dozens of events happening in the next few weeks around Central Florida where you can do just that.

For instance, last week the Pine Hills community held a Hob Nob at the Central Florida Fairgrounds. We met with Geraldine Thompson and Randolph Bracy, the candidates for Florida Senate District 15, and asked them about pedestrian safety on state roads. Check out reporter Treasure Roberts’ story HERE.

And I profiled a business in the Horizon West community, Playa Pizza, that is holding a series of events with local political candidates. You can read about Pizza and Politics HERE.

We now have a listing of political events on our website. Many are candidate forums or hob nobs, with many candidates expected to attend.

Check out the list HERE. And if you know of any political events we should add, email them to me at czizo@wkmg.com.
