7 candidates make the ballot for Orlando’s District 5 special election

Election to take over suspended Commission Regina Hill’s seat is Tuesday, May 21

ORLANDO, Fla. – Seven people will be on the ballot in the special election to take over the Orlando Commission District 5 seat next month, the city clerk’s office confirmed Tuesday.

The seven candidates qualified to be on the ballot out of 11 potential candidates who filed paperwork.

They are:

  • Travaris McCurdy, a former Florida representative
  • Businessman Cameron Hope
  • Shaniqua “Shan” Rose, executive director of the community redevelopment association in Eatonville
  • Community activist Lawanna Gelzer
  • Ericka Dunlap, former Miss America
  • Tiakeysha Ellison, who is a business and financial coach
  • Community activist Miles Mulrain Jr.

The candidates are running to replace Regina Hill, the suspended city commissioner currently facing charges of elderly exploitation. Hill has pleaded not guilty.

The winner of the special election will serve as interim city commissioner until Hill’s case is concluded. If Hill is found guilty, they will hold the seat until the current term ends in 2025. If Hill is found not guilty, she could return to the seat to finish her term.

Early voting will run from May 13 to May 19. Election Day is May 21.
