Hakeem Alvena is setting the pace at Poinciana High School.
On the track, Alvena is a blur for the Eagles, and he’s got the medals to prove it. He’s got four of them to show off after a dominant performance at a recent Orange Belt Conference meet.
“I don’t put too much pressure on myself,” Alvena told News 6. “But at the end of the day, I know how hard I work for what I’ve achieved. But, of course, when I do under-perform, I do get upset, but you got to remember there is always the next one, the next meet.”
Alvena used to run for Liberty High School. Now at Poinciana, he specializes in the 200-meter dash. And Alvena owns a personal best time of 21.9 seconds.
“You can travel to a lot of new places,” Alvena said about one of the perks of running track. “At track meets, you meet a lot of new people because it’s not the same with basketball or football where when you’re on the field or the court, everybody is mad at each other. But with track, even your competitors are happy for you; they’re helping you out.”
