MELBOURNE, Fla. – Softball royalty lives out on the coast at Melbourne High School.
The Bulldogs are once again aiming for a softball state championship. The undefeated team has talent up and down the lineup.
Take Layna Ayala, for example. Only a freshman, Ayala catches and plays utility for the Bulldogs.
Ayala can hit, too. She’s batting over .440 to lead the team that are looking to punch their ticket to the Class 6A final four with a win over Bartow High School on Friday.
“Definitely there was like an expectation because of winning states,” Ayala told News 6. “But not so much pressure because they were very inviting and just saying, ‘Just do what you can do.’ Everyone is pretty close, and it’s like if you’re upset, someone will pick you up every time. It’s not like bringing each other down if you make a mistake. Everyone is like, ‘Oh, you’re good.’ They don’t tear you down; they bring you up.”
