One student from each of the schools will help carry out the preservation plans to โcultivate the next generation of Black professionals in historic preservation,โ Leggs said. AdThe $650,000 in funding is part of a larger initiative by the National Trust, which launched the action fund in 2017 as a $25 million campaign to preserve Black culture and celebrate the historic achievements of the Black community. And during President Joe Bidenโs campaign, he pledged to address the historic underfunding of HBCUs, especially regarding federal research dollars.

The couple is giving $40 million to each of three institutions: the United Negro College Fund, Spelman College and Morehouse College. The organizations said it is the largest individual gift in support of student scholarships at HBCUs. He launched a $100 million education fund in 2016, beginning with money toward college scholarships for black and Latino students. YouTube, meanwhile, pledged $100 million to help black artists and other creators.
