A Florida lawmaker has introduced legislation aimed at strengthening the state’s dangerous-dog laws following the death of an 8-year-old boy who was mauled in Volusia County last month.

R.J. Larizza, state attorney for the 7th Judicial District of Florida, has voluntarily disqualified himself from the investigation and prosecution of a dog attack that killed a DeLand boy.

According to the attorneys, the boy was waiting with a friend in a local gated community when the pair was approached by a couple of dogs "that did not belong."
