Deputies said they were able to identify a 15-year-old student as the person behind the false tips. Volusia County School District’s Director of Safety and Security Chief Michelle Newman said this kind of thing isn’t a laughing matter. “False tips not only disrupted the school day but also created fear among our students, families, and staff members,” Newman said in a news release. Every tip submitted via the app is thoroughly vetted and investigated and those students making false tips will face serious consequences.

Deputies said no injuries were reported and the lockdown was done as a precaution. It was lifted at about 12:30 p.m. after authorities determined the tip was unsubstantiated. “Law enforcement is investigating, and in the meantime our school is safe, and students are secure in classrooms,” the message read. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said shortly before noon that deputies were checking building.

For the past year, the students have been working with NASA’s HUNCH program, a nationwide program that partners with schools across the country to help with needs for NASA. Pine Ridge High school's Advancement Manufacturing Academy prepares students with engineering and manufacturing skills and since partnering with HUNCH, they've been working on about 180 access panels for NASA. The Academy, which was launched six years ago with help from Rep. David Santiago, prepares students with engineering and manufacturing skills. “Anything that gets sent up to space has to be precise and partnering with this HUNCH program that is allowing parts to go up and be utilized for the space program is huge for these students,” Santiago said.

Deputies said the investigation began Tuesday morning when someone complained to the school resource officer that a student had drugs. Deputies said they then went to the parking lot and searched the boy’s silver Mazda after they saw a large machete between the driver’s seat and center console. Pipes, drug paraphernalia, a glass jar containing presumptive marijuana, cigars, a 4-foot axe, a 1-foot axe, an ice pick and a throwing knife were also found, according to the affidavit. The student claimed he forgot the items were in his car and also said that sometimes his friends leave items inside his vehicle.
