SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – Students in Seminole County Public Schools will not be required to be inside the classroom for their nine-week assessments. The change comes after families recently filled out a survey regarding the students' return to the classroom. “Students will no longer be required to return to campus to participate in the assessment,” a letter sent to parents Friday said. “We are learning and we must be flexible to best support your student’s instruction,” school officials said. “We appreciate your understanding and flexibility in these challenging times.”The school said more information will soon be available regarding the changes.

The announcement primarily affects new students hoping to enroll at universities that will provide classes entirely online as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The new order was released Friday as a clarification to earlier guidance from March 9 that suspended existing limits around online education for international students. They said many colleges had already prepared housing for international students, even at universities offering online instruction only. It's likely to deliver a financial hit to colleges that rely on revenue from international students, who typically pay higher tuition rates. The nation attracted roughly 1.1 million international students in the 2018-19 school year.

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. New recommendations released Thursday and set to be considered by the Brevard County school board include teachers and students wearing masks, including on buses, where kids may also be asked to use hand sanitizer before and after each ride. District administrators said that if someone at school tests positive, the whole school could close for three days and students could be away from the building for 14 days. Brevard County teachers are set to return to schools Aug. 3. "What we're hearing is a lot of narrative about what could be done and not enough procedures in place," Brevard Federation of Teachers Vice President Vanessa Skipper said. The superintendent is expected to present the final reopening plan at the school board meeting on Tuesday.

The lawsuit, filed in Boston's federal court, seeks to prevent federal immigration authorities from enforcing the rule. The guidance says international students won't be exempt even if an outbreak forces their schools online during the fall term. The guidance was released the same day Harvard announced it would be keeping its classes online this fall. Many schools have also come to depend on tuition revenue from international students, who typically pay higher tuition rates. It creates an urgent dilemma for thousands of international students who became stranded in the U.S. last spring after the coronavirus forced their schools to move online.

Wednesday was the last day students had to move out of their on-campus dorms after they were told that they wouldn’t be permitted to return to campus after spring break. A university spokesman said the decision to pay back $5.3 million in refunds to students was decided during a UCF Board of Trustees meeting Thursday morning. Documentation from the teleconference doesn’t list how or when students will receive refunds but does state that the money will come from education and general carryforward funds. Thus far, one UCF student has tested positive for COVID-19 and others are in self-quarantine to monitor their health. As a stay-at-home mandate is slated to begin in Orange County, it’s unclear when students will be allowed to return to dorms.

LEESBURG, Fla. – A Leesburg High School student brought a knife and a lighter onto campus and concealed it in his backpack, police said. Investigators said the school’s principal received a tip that the student had a lighter in his backpack, and when the school resource officer was called to search the bag, a large knife in a black sheath was also found. Records show that the student told investigators he had been on a recent fishing trip and forgot the knife was in his backpack. The student was arrested and is now facing charges of bringing a weapon onto school property, according to the arrest report.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s a little easier for students at the University of North Florida to get a slice of pizza when they are hungry. The university recently installed a vending machine, dubbed the Pizza ATM, in one of its residence halls. Students can order a pizza with just a push of a button. The company behind the machine says the pizzas are pre-cooked and placed in a refrigerated compartment. Once someone orders a pizza, it’s heated up and dispensed in just minutes.
