The Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File recently published its summary of shark bites for 2020 and once again, Florida topped the list. The instances included in International Shark Attack File’s 2020 review include 57 unprovoked bites, 39 provoked attacks, six boat bites as well as others. While the data may seem staggering, experts said the number of unprovoked bites is down compared to the 64 bites in 2019. News outlets reported the man was swimming in the waters off Siesta Key, Florida, when the attack happened. WTVT reported a woman called 911 and said the 39-year-old man had been bitten on his hand and arm and was bleeding profusely. She was heard reassuring him “everything’s going to be OK.”Sarasota Memorial Hospital spokesman Kim Savage said a man had been admitted Tuesday and the wound was confirmed to have been a shark bite, but she said she could not provide any more details on his condition or personal information.

The man required hospitalization while the teen did not.

Authorities said the man was standing in chest-deep water when he was bitten on the foot. Officials said the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but he was taken to a hospital in an ambulance. Volusia County Beach Safety said it flew the red and purple flag Sunday. The purple flag was flown because of jellyfish spotted close to shore.

New Smyrna Beach is unofficially known as the shark attack capital of the world, according to CNN. According to Florida Museum’s International Shark Attack File, there have been 312 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks in Volusia County since 1882.
