According to the FHP, the 17-year-old Leesburg boy was driving a Jeep Wrangler east along Goose Prairie Road got into the westbound lane to pass a pickup truck.

However, the Jeep got back into the eastbound lane as another vehicle approached in the westbound lane, causing the back of the Jeep to strike the front of the truck, troopers said.

The FHP said the Jeep then traveled onto the eastbound grass shoulder, but the driver overcorrected and ended up driving across both lanes onto the westbound shoulder.

Troopers said the Jeep then overturned several times before crashing into a wire fence.

Both the driver and his 16-year-old passenger, of Umatilla, died at the scene, according to the FHP. The boys, whose names have not been released, were both wearing seat belts, according to the FHP.

Troopers initially identified the victims as men.

The pickup driver, a 38-year-old Umatilla man, was not injured and remained at the scene, troopers said.

Goose Prairie Road was blocked in both directions after the crash.
