When entering from a side street, who has the right of way in a median break?

Trooper Steve answers questions about Florida traffic laws

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.

A News 6 viewer asked: “When entering from a side street, who has the right of way in a median break?”

Trooper Steve said this is a common traffic scenario in Central Florida.

“You come to a stop sign and you have to cross traffic to get into the median, which then allows you to travel in another direction,” he said.

But which driver is supposed to yield?

“If you’re the driver at the stop sign, it’s on you (to yield to other vehicles),” Trooper Steve said. “The other drivers already ‘own the road.’”
