ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.
Thursday, Trooper Steve was asked, “When a crossing guard is not crossing students, can they stop vehicles and assist in directing traffic?”
He said that a crossing guard’s authority is based solely on helping pedestrians cross traffic.
“School crossing guards are vital for pedestrian safety, and most importantly getting our students to and from school safely,” he said.

However, when that’s not happening, Trooper Steve said a crossing guard is supposed to stand watch, waiting for pedestrians to approach the intersection.
“A school crossing guard has no authority to direct or control vehicular traffic,” he said. “I understand that in the morning hours and afternoon, traffic around the school can be crazy, but this is not a time to step into traffic and direct it.”
