ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The westbound lanes of State Road 528 reopened nearly 12 hours after two semitrucks crashed and became engulfed in flames in Orange County.
The crash happened around 8:10 a.m. in the westbound lanes near mile marker 19, officials said. The lanes reopened around 7:30 p.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a flatbed trailer was traveling west on S.R. 528 in the outside lane when the driver swerved to the left in attempt to avoid colliding with vehicles ahead. The truck jackknifed and crashed into the median concrete barrier, the FHP said.
A flatbed ended up in the direct path of a tractor-trailer that was westbound in the inside lane of S.R. 528 and the trucks collided, causing both vehicles to become engulfed in flames, the FHP said.
One of the drivers, a 47-year-old Winter Haven man, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, troopers said. The other, a 41-year-old Orlando man, was uninjured, according to troopers.
Sky 6 video showed firefighters hosing down a semitruck in the westbound lanes.
The lanes reopened after the Central Florida Expressway Authority conducted a safety inspection of the bridge.
An investigation is ongoing.
