Girl hit by red-light runner while riding scooter in Orange County, FHP says

Girl is awake and verbal, troopers say

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A 16-year-old Orlando girl riding a scooter in Orange County was hospitalized with serious injuries Friday morning after she was struck by an SUV that ran a red light, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 8:44 a.m. at the intersection of Avalon Park and Golden Isle boulevards, troopers said.

According to an FHP crash report, the girl was crossing Avalon Park Boulevard in a northeasterly direction — in a marked crosswalk — when she was struck by the front right of an SUV traveling southbound on the same roadway. The 26-year-old Orlando woman driving the SUV ran a red light, causing the crash, troopers said. The woman was not injured and remained at the scene, the report states.

The girl, who troopers further described as a high school student, was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, according to FHP. She was awake and verbal at last check, troopers said.

A roadblock in the southbound lanes of Avalon Park Boulevard has since been lifted in the area.

The crash involving the scooter happened about an hour after a Volkswagen Jetta and a Nissan Pathfinder collided at the same intersection around 7:34 a.m., what troopers said led to no medical transports or roadblocks as both drivers relocated to a nearby parking lot.

FHP is still investigating both crashes, adding they were not related. Nothing has yet been said about potential charges in the crash that left the girl hospitalized.
