ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the roads, helping Central Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.
Trooper Steve on Tuesday was asked, “On two- or three-lane roadways going in the same direction, can we stay in the left or center lane if cars are passing on the right side?”

Trooper Steve said the “left-lane saga” may be going to a level that’s not necessary.
“Staying out of the left lane is primarily focused on highways -- at highway speeds. When it comes to our local residential roadways, there is an understanding that traffic will pick up and other drivers are traveling in different directions at different times,” he said.
Here’s what he suggests.
“If you are being passed on the right-hand side, take a look around you. Are you the one traveling too slowly?” Trooper Steve said. “If so, then consider changing the travel lane you are in -- if there is not a directional change ahead. When it comes to local streets, traffic will back up, traffic will move to open travel lanes, but if we are focused on the movement of traffic in our heads, then it will allow us to make proper decisions.”
