Fatal crash shuts down I-4 in Daytona Beach (FDOT)

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A crash Saturday morning on Interstate 4 in Volusia County killed a DeLand man and injured two other people, forcing the temporary closure of all westbound lanes in Daytona Beach, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 3:20 a.m. at mile marker 130, west of Interstate 95, troopers said.

According to an FHP crash report, a 2013 Honda Accord being driven by a 37-year-old DeLand man was traveling westbound behind a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe carrying two occupants, a 36-year-old Deltona woman driving it and a 37-year-old DeLand man in the passenger’s seat. The Honda’s driver failed to observe the Hyundai ahead, causing the front left of the Honda to strike the rear right of the Hyundai, the report states.

The collision caused the Honda to rotate counterclockwise, striking the median guardrail before running off the roadway to the right, troopers said. The Honda crossed all westbound lanes before it traveled into a ditch embankment, became airborne and struck a tree in the outside shoulder, overturning and landing on its right side, according to FHP.

The Hyundai ran off the roadway to the left and started rotating counterclockwise in the center median, overturning multiple times and landing upright, troopers said. The Hyundai’s passenger was ejected during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, the report states. Neither of the Hyundai’s occupants were wearing seat belts and it was unknown whether the Honda’s driver was, troopers said.

Troopers said both drivers were hospitalized with serious injuries, further describing the Honda driver’s injuries as non-life-threatening.

All westbound lanes of I-4 were shut down in the area of the crash until after 8 a.m.

FHP is still investigating.
