Motorcyclist dies in crash with turning SUV in Melbourne, police say

Crash occurred in area of West Nasa, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A 34-year-old Titusville man riding a motorcycle through Melbourne died Saturday in a crash with a turning SUV, according to police.

Officers responded to the area of West Nasa and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards, noting the crash involved a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle and a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The motorcycle rider was identified as Benjamin James Fish Jr. while the Tesla driver was described as a 35-year-old West Melbourne woman, the Melbourne Police Department said in a news release.

The motorcycle had been traveling eastbound on West Nasa Boulevard as the Tesla traveled west on the same roadway, the release states. The Tesla driver then attempted to turn left onto southbound Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, entering the motorcyclist’s direct path, police said.

The motorcycle struck the Tesla as the SUV’s driver attempted to complete the turn, according to the release. Responding officers began CPR on the motorcyclist, yet he was later pronounced dead at the scene by Melbourne Fire Department personnel, police said.

An investigation is ongoing to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, according to the release.
