Is it illegal to stop too far back from a red light?

Trooper Steve answers viewer questions

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve answers viewer questions about the rules of the road, helping Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.

Trooper Steve on Thursday was asked by viewer Timothy M., “Why do people stop so far behind other cars or from a red light? Sometimes more than two to three car lengths.”

He said he’s seen this and it drives him crazy.

“In a time where the biggest thing we complain about is traffic, you would think we would want to fill in as much space as possible. All too often we come across a driver who has stopped well before their required area to do so,” Trooper Steve said.

So, you’re in heavy traffic — maybe five or six cars from the actual traffic light — and there’s nothing but space to the right of you because another driver has just stopped and left it that way. According to Trooper Steve, that driver could be ticketed.

“This is illegal and could be issued a traffic citation in a few different ways. Whether it be impeding the flow of traffic or improper stopping or standing, fill in the space in front of you so that the rest of the traffic can follow,” he said.
