FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – A portion of State Road A1A near the Flagler Beach Pier will briefly close on Aug. 22 as Hurricane Ernesto is expected to create swells near Florida, despite passing far from the coast.
Depending on the weather, a section of the road from State Road 100 to South 6th Street would only be closed for two to four hours as equipment for the Army Corps of Engineers’ beach nourishment project is moved around, according to Flagler County.
“We thought this move would happen on August 18, which is what has been shown on the FDOT flashing sign to inform the public, but Hurricane Ernesto is expected to create some big swells close to shore even though the storm will pass far from our coast,” Flagler County Coastal Engineering Administrator Ansley Wren-Key said in a statement. “We also expect the work will have to be paused for 24 to 48 hours this weekend.”
A portion of the boardwalk adjacent to A1A will be removed and replaced with a temporary sand ramp for equipment access, according to the county.
Ground mats and debris will be removed once the machinery and equipment is on the beach and the ramp will remain in place until the equipment is returned south for demobilization, at which time the boardwalk will be replaced, the county said.

Residents are encouraged to use other areas of the beach and to otherwise be extremely cautious in the construction area.
