MELBOURNE, Fla. – A driver faces several DUI charges after police said they struck and killed a motorcyclist before leaving the scene of the crash on Saturday, according to a news release.
Melbourne police said they responded to the area of Lake Washington Road and North Harbor City Boulevard around 11:57 p.m. regarding a crash between a vehicle and a motorcycle.

According to the release, an initial investigation revealed that a Nissan Maxima was turning right onto southbound North Harbor City Boulevard from eastbound Lake Washington Road when a Yamaha motorcycle collided with the vehicle.

Police said the Maxima, being driven by 36-year-old Tae Schroeder, left the scene of the crash before being discovered “a short distance away.”
According to the release, Schroeder was found walking away from the area not far from where the car was found.
“Probable cause was established for the arrest of the Nissan’s driver,” police said. “There are indications that alcohol/drugs were a factor in the crash.”
Schroeder was placed under arrest and faces charges of DUI, DUI manslaughter, DUI with property damage and leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury or death, according to the release.
