Traffic blocked after driver killed, 2 seriously hurt in New Smyrna Beach crash

Crash happened along Josephine Street around 10:11 a.m.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A crash in New Smyrna Beach on Sunday morning ended with the death of a driver, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

In a release, troopers said the crash happened on Josephine Street and Elizabeth Street around 10:11 a.m.

Investigators said a 2008 Hyundai Elantra was driving west along Josephine Street when the driver “failed to negotiate a curve.”

The Hyundai then veered into the eastbound lane and the path of an oncoming SUV, the release shows. As a result, the two vehicles collided head-on.

Troopers announced that the Hyundai driver — an adult male who has yet to be identified — was taken tot he hospital, where he died.

Meanwhile, the 77-year-old SUV driver and his 79-year-old passenger were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, troopers added.

The release says that there is a roadblock for both lanes on Josephine Street, from Old Mission Road to James Street.

This crash remains under investigation. No additional information has been provided at this time.
