OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – Osceola County is set to launch its second phase of its school zone safety program on Wednesday, where drivers will receive a $100 fine and a citation if caught speeding in a school zone, according to a news release from the county.

These changes come after the program launched Phase 1 back in February, where warnings were issued for drivers going over 10 mph over the speed limit at 10 Osceola schools, the release stated.

The schools entering the citation period are:

  • Bellalago Academy
  • Boggy Creek Elementary School
  • Deerwood Elementary
  • Horizon Middle School
  • KOA Elementary
  • Liberty High School
  • Mater Brighton Lakes Academy
  • Mater Palms Academy
  • Parkway Middle School
  • Sunrise Elementary School

Phase 2 also adds 17 cameras to four schools: BridgePrep Academy, Narcoossee Elementary School, Poinciana High School, and Reedy Creek Elementary School, according to the release.

The warning period will also be 30 days for these schools, with the program transitioning to citations starting April 25.

During the warning period between Feb. 24 and March 21, more than 5,600 warnings were issued to drivers, according to the district.

The speed cameras operate by first taking a picture of the vehicle caught speeding, then a second close-up of the license plate, collecting additional data including video, date, vehicle speed, and location.

Each infraction will be verified by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office before the fine is issued, the district said.

The infractions are non-criminal and will not be reported to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the county’s website said.

Osceola County worked with Verra Mobility, a leader in speed safety technology, to administer this safety program.
