Car split in half during fatal crash that knocked out power in Sanford

SANFORD, Fla. – A car was split in half during a fatal crash that knocked out power to several Sanford homes early Wednesday, officials said.

The two-vehicle crash was reported just after midnight on East 7th Street at South Bay Avenue near Mellonville Avenue.

Sanford police said a blue Mazda was speeding northbound on Bay Avenue and did not stop at a stop sign. An eastbound vehicle on 7th Street struck the Mazda, which went airborne and struck a power pole, splitting the car in half, police said.

The driver of the Mazda was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital and was later released. Their names have not been released.

The back of the Mazda flew over a residential fence and struck the roof and side of a house, according to police. No one inside the home was injured.

Johnnie Singleton said his home was damaged in the crash.

"I realized (the car) didn't come through the fence and I didn't know why I had all of this damage, but the debris was flying in the air and landed into the house," Singleton said. "It's terrible, they use (the street) for a race track. I don't understand why they speed so much."

Power was later restored to 10 homes in the neighborhood, according to Florida Power & Light.
