Hurricane center eyes disturbance near Florida. Here’s what to know

ORLANDO, Fla. – The National Hurricane Center on Tuesday highlighted an area of low pressure over the eastern Gulf of Mexico for potential tropical development over the next several days.

The system is forecast to track northeast, crossing Florida from coast to coast. As it emerges into the open waters of the Atlantic, conditions will be favorable enough to possibly develop the system.

Due to the possibility, the National Hurricane Center is giving the area a 10% chance of development in the next two days and a 20% chance of development over the next seven days.

This is the same area of tropical moisture that is expected to bring beneficial rain across Central Florida through the week, producing rainfall accumulations of 1-5 inches.

While the rain is welcomed news for many under a moderate drought, the highest threat for flooding will be focused across South Florida. All counties south of Lake Okeechobee remain under a flood watch through Wednesday evening.

The next tropical update from the National Hurricane Center will be issued at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
