Chill out! It’s gonna be how cold for how long in Florida?

Sunshine State starts 2025 with blasts of arctic air

As the coldest temperatures in two years moved into South Florida, cold-stunned iguanas like this one are a sight to be seen, Jan. 22, 2020, in Dania Beach, Florida. (WPLG)

ORLANDO, Fla. – The new year is coming in C-O-L-D in Florida!

And the cold weather is not going away any time soon.

The first cold front reached Florida earlier this week, with temperatures and especially the humidity dropping.

Climate Prediction Center has much of the eastern US including central Florida WELL below average with the next round of cold air coming (WKMG 2024)

A frost advisory is in effect for portions of Marion County from 3-9 a.m. Friday.

By the first weekend of the New Year, we’re looking at pretty cold temperatures to start the day and only “warming” into the upper 50s to low 60s on Saturday.

We will get a bit of a reprieve from the cold temperatures, but more cold blasts are on the way!

There’s been a ton of chatter across social media. If you use Instagram, TikTok, X, or even follow occasional weather updates on YouTube, you’ve probably heard talk about a blast of Arctic air forecast to come out of Canada.

Models are pinpointing two potential major storm systems expected to help force feed the arctic air from Canada all the way down to the Southeast (WKMG 2024)

Millions will experience temps well below freezing, and many will also receive snow.

Florida will get in on the Arctic action as well. Temperatures will plummet when the first major winter system that’s expected to drag that dense but shallow layer of arctic air south. This will likely get going around Jan. 6.

The jets are going to get wonky, helping funnel arctic air directly out of northern Canada down to the southern plains and the southeast US (WKMG 2024)

From there, the cold air will rapidly begin to settle in. Our neighbors in the Panhandle will likely experience freezing temperatures. Now, where things really ramp up is when you factor in how windy it will be. Arctic air is much drier, and more dense than your traditional polar air that we see flow through our Central Florida viewing area during the winter time.

Combine that with a fairly robust low pressure system, that’s going to force-feed it to us into early next week, and your wind chill is going to be absolutely disgusting. Temperatures will feel WELL-BELOW freezing, with feels-like temps in the LOW TEENS trying to extend their reach just to the north of the Florida-Georgia state line.

On average when this blast hits, temperatures will be around these values seen here on a day to day, night to night basis (WKMG 2024)

We’ll have to see if it gets cold enough in South Florida to knock iguanas out of trees.

There’s a lot to cover over the next week to 10 days, so be sure to stick with your Pinpoint Weather Team for updates as we get closer to the first extreme cooldown of the new year.
