Can a commercial vehicle enforcement officer stop me?

News 6 viewers ask traffic questions

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.

Thursday, a viewer asked, “Can a commercial vehicle enforcement officer stop me if I do something illegal?”

The quick answer: You bet!

In July 2011, Florida’s motor carrier compliance team was officially absorbed by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, marking a pivotal shift in the way the state enforces road safety. This transition meant that former motor carrier compliance officers took on a new title as Florida state troopers, adding specialized expertise to the ranks of Florida’s Highway Patrol.

These troopers continue to focus on commercial vehicle enforcement, using their specialized training to regulate the safety standards of large trucks and commercial vehicles on Florida’s highways. However, their authority extends beyond just commercial vehicle compliance; they possess the same law enforcement authority as any state trooper, if not more.

With certification to enforce federal transportation regulations, these troopers play a crucial role in ensuring that commercial vehicles adhere to safety protocols and operate responsibly on the roads.

By merging motor carrier compliance with the FHP, Florida has strengthened its efforts to keep highways safe for all drivers, leveraging these troopers’ unique skills to oversee the state’s commercial transportation standards.
