ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.
A viewer on Thursday asked Trooper Steve, “Who do you call when you come across debris in the roadway or interstate?”
“If you spot debris in the road, don’t worry — calling it in is the right thing to do and local authorities are there to help! Whether it’s a stray tire, furniture, or even a wayward traffic cone, reporting roadway debris is crucial for keeping everyone safe,” Trooper Steve said.
If you’re on the highway, it’s as simple as dialing *347 (that’s *FHP) on your phone. This connects you to the Florida Highway Patrol’s communication center, where they can quickly dispatch Road Rangers to clear the way.
For roads within your city, Trooper Steve said it’s also a good idea to save your local police department’s non-emergency number in your contacts. This makes it quick and easy to reach them if you come across something blocking your lane. Non-emergency calls like this help police respond effectively to keep roadways clear and safe for everyone.
“So, next time you see something in the road, don’t hesitate to make that call,” he said. “Police are ready to assist, and reporting debris is one more way to keep Florida’s roads safe!”
