On the same day that the “Steamboat Willie” incarnation of Mickey Mouse went into the public domain, a slasher film featuring the classic character was announced.
Billing itself as “the first-ever live-action Mickey Mouse comedy-horror feature film,” a trailer for “Mickey’s Mouse Trap” was released through YouTube on Monday.

While Disney still owns the modern versions of the character, two 1928 cartoon shorts featuring Mickey Mouse — “Steamboat Willie” and “Plane Crazy” — went into the public domain on Monday.
This means that members of the public can be freely shared, adapted or remixed, hence the film’s announcement.

In the trailer’s description, a disclaimer notes that the film specifically makes use of the “Steamboat Willie” iteration of Mickey Mouse due to its release into the public domain.
Appropriately enough, the trailer shows clips from the cartoon short and a killer who dons a black-and-white Mickey Mouse mask.
The film’s IMDb page describes the movie as follows:
It’s Alex’s 21st Birthday, but she’s stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift so her friends decide to surprise her, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them which she must survive.

According to the page, the film was directed by Jamie Bailey, and stars Simon Phillips as Mickey.
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, though. Last year, a Winnie the Pooh horror movie was released after the titular character was put into the public domain back in 2022.
