Angry supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday in a chaotic protest aimed at thwarting a peaceful transfer of power.

The riots forced many lawmakers to be rushed from the building, and interrupted challenges to President-Elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory.

Trump eventually issued a recorded video asking for peace, advising his supporters to go home, but he provided a statement wrapped around false claims that the election had been stolen. At last check, he hadn’t spoken live.

Biden did address the country Wednesday afternoon, calling the violent invasion on the U.S. Capitol “an assault on the most sacred of American undertakings: the doing of the people’s business.”

He asked Trump to do more.

More than 1,100 D.C. National Guard members were mobilized to help support law enforcement, according to the Pentagon. Protests went on into the nighttime hours, despite a Washington D.C. curfew mandating people had to be off the streets until 6 a.m. Thursday.
