MELBOURNE, Fla. – Greg in Melbourne had been trying for months to unstick his stuck hose end, but couldn’t loosen it from the hose bib. It was seized! We tried 4 different options, each time escalating the leverage and force when one didn’t work.
We purchased:
PB Blaster
WD-40
We brought with us:
Vice grips
Crescent wrench
Pipe wrench
Hack saw
Step 1
First things first: spray the heck out of the hose bib with PB Blaster. It’s one of the best chemicals for loosening stuck stuff. Let it sit for a few hours and work into the metal-on-metal connection. Sometimes this is enough, sometimes not.
Step 2
If PB Blaster does nothing, grab some vice grip pliers. These are great because the pliers will lock down onto the hose end like a vice. But make sure you hold the hose spigot before trying to turn the hose end! Grab a buddy and have him or her hold the spigot (faucet) with another pair of pliers, like a crescent wrench, so you don’t break off the faucet!
Step 3
If the vice grips don’t work, grab the pipe wrench. Leverage is the key! The longer the pipe wrench, the more leverage you’ll be applying when you try and spin the hose end. Again, make sure to have a buddy hold the spigot! Put the wrench on the hose end and start to try and spin the end. This usually works and should apply all the force you need.
Step 4
If all else fails, use the hack saw to cut the hose end! Just go slow, trying not to slice into the threads of the hose bibs. Just cut through the outside of the hose end and then you should be able to pry it off.
Step 5
Once you remove the old (and now likely broken) hose end, use some WD-40 to lubricate the hose spigot, especially before you screw on the new hose end, so it doesn’t freeze up again!
