Broken hose spigot? Just swap it out!

Step-by-step repair

LAKE COUNTY – Jamie asked us to Get Results at her Paisley home because her hose spigot was busted. The handle was spinning freely and wouldn’t turn on or off. Because it was attached to her irrigation pump and not her house, we were able to change out the entire spigot.

We purchased:

3/4″ hose spigot

Teflon tape

We brought with us:

Pipe wrench

Crescent wrench

Step 1

Turn off the water! This is obvious, but trust me, I’ve forgotten to do this. Your water meter somewhere near the curb has a knob that you can turn with a pair of pliers. In Jamie’s case her hose is operated by a pump, so we just turned off the pump.

Step 2

Take off the old spigot. Jamie’s situation is that her spigot handle couldn’t be tightened so it kept spinning. One option was to unscrew the packing nut and replacing the entire valve handle but it was far easier just to replace the entire spigot. So we unscrewed the spigot from the pipe coming off her well. Make sure you have someone help you brace the old pipe using a wrench while you spin off the spigot with a second wrench so you don’t break it!

Step 3

Use white Teflon tape on the new spigot threads. The tape creates a solid seal and minimizes leaks. Coat the threads of the male end with one layer of tape by wrapping the tape around the threads.

Step 4

Put it all back together. Screw the spigot into the pipe again making sure to hold the old pipe with a wrench. Spin it by hand as much as possible and then tighten with a wrench.
