ORLANDO, Fla. – An Orange County sheriff who saved a 3-year-old girl from a swimming pool filled with contaminated water after seeing her following a dog was recognized Tuesday for his life-saving efforts.
On March 6, Orange County sheriff's Deputy Samuel Mendez saw the girl following a dog. Mendez followed the girl until she stopped at an unknown home, and a woman told him that she did not know the girl, who continued to wander away.

The woman informed Mendez about a nearby abandoned house that had a pool filled with contaminated water, and Mendez ran to the home and found the girl submerged in water, the Sheriff's Office said.
Mendez pulled the girl out of the pool and called for medical assistance.
A ceremony was held to recognize Mendez and others for their lifesaving efforts.
