PALM BAY, Fla. – At least one person was killed Friday morning when a car overturned in a crash on Interstate 95 in Brevard County, forcing officials to close the southbound lanes for nearly four hours.
The deadly crash happened around 8:30 a.m. on I-95 southbound near mile marker 168 near Grant Road in Palm Bay.
A Ford van's rear tire fell apart, according to a report, drove into the right shoulder of the road and flipped twice before landing. The 59-year-old driver was ejected from the van and pronounced dead on scene.
As authorities were investigating the crash, a car in the northbound lanes drove off the interstate and crashed in the woods, starting a fire. Two people were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The roads were reopened Friday afternoon after about four hours, but traffic was backed up for more than 12 miles as comuters were forced to take another route.
