ORLANDO, Fla. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Friday announced a recall of Kenmore dehumidifiers after malfunctions caused millions of dollars in property damage.
The CPSC said the Kenmore appliances can overheat, smoke, melt and catch on fire, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.

The recall affects about 795,000 dehumidifiers sold exclusively at Sears and Kmart between 2003 and 2009.
Consumers reported 107 incidents involving the appliances, with more than $7 million in property damage and three smoke inhalation injuries.

The CPSC said consumers should turn off and unplug the dehumidifiers immediately. There are no repair remedies announced. Sears, instead, has agreed to offer gift cards for use at any Sears or Kmart store or on the retailers' websites.
