Local 6 traffic reporter Jessica Sanchez stepping down

Sanchez thanks viewers for their support

Jessica Sanchez is stepping down as WKMG-TV Local 6's Morning News traffic reporter.

Many Central Floridians may remember that Sanchez was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in March of last year and won her battle, becoming cancer-free this past January.

"I have struggled with this decision for months because I love what I do, and I love the people at Local 6," Jessica said.  "But after my long battle with cancer, my doctors are telling me to scale back on work and concentrate on my recovery, so I'm going to take time off to heal my body."

"We have been working closely with Jessica throughout all of her decisions," said Skip Valet, vice president and general manager of WKMG Local 6.   "While we respect Jessica's decision, of course we will all miss our friend.  As her friends, we know and understand that her health is always paramount."

"I won't be leaving my friends and viewers in a lurch," Sanchez said.  "I am passing on the duties to my friend and co-worker Julie Broughton.  She has become one of my closest friends since my diagnosis and she continues to be the one I turn to for advice or just when I need a smile. I'm so happy she will be joining the morning team because I know with her experience, viewers will be in great hands."

"Jessica was a big deciding factor for me taking in on this role," said Local 6 reporter and meteorologist Julie Broughton.  "I know she wanted and needed to take a step back, and I wanted to be able to help my friend, co-worker and our viewers."

"Julie Broughton has 13 years of experience in Central Florida," Valet said.  "She knows the roads inside and out and can get our viewers around traffic, out the door and where they are going on time with a smile on their face.  Julie will begin this Monday."

"I want to thank those who have had me in their thoughts and prayers," Sanchez said.  "Those who have left messages, sent emails, comments and cards -- the show of support was and continues to be overwhelming. It helped pull me through the most difficult time of my life, inspired me to come back, and it is comforting to know I will always have their support."

Sanchez's last day at Local 6 will be Friday, October 3.
