GENEVA, Fla. – A 1-and-half-year-old boy who wandered into a Seminole County roadway early Thursday morning was struck by a vehicle and killed, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The fatal accident happened around 7:45 a.m. on State Road 46 near Sand Pine Place in Geneva.

The FHP said Christopher Johnson, who lives nearby, wandered away from his parents inside the house and walked onto the road.

"This was a very active 1.5 year old. This child just learned how to climb out of the crib," said FHP Sgt. Kim Montes, describing the crash as a tragedy.

Montes said the father had left the home and the mother was still in the house when the boy somehow got out of the residence and walked onto SR 46.

The boy was thrown 45 feet from the crash and witnesses stopped and tried to perform CPR, but the boy was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital and died about 30 minutes later, troopers said.

An investigation is ongoing.

"Right now we don't believe that the driver could've done anything to avoid this crash," Montes said.

After interviewing the child's parents, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office says they know more about how the child got out of the home. They are not elaborating at this time.

"If you have a child that is very active and can get out of cribs and can get out of rooms and unlock doors, it's something to think about on how to put an extra barrier," Montes said.

SCSO says they believe the child getting away was accidental and it's not likely criminal charges will be filed against the parents.
