EDGEWATER, Fla. – A girl and four adults were attacked Sunday by a pit bull in Volusia County, authorities said.
Edgewater Fire Rescue crews responded to a report of a pit bull that had bitten a child and adults who were trying to help the child.
When crews arrived at the Marilyn Drive home, they said they saw the dog biting several people, officers said.
One of the victims was watching the dog for its owner, who is out of town, officials said. She said that when she let the dog out, it ran straight toward the girl and bit her arm, causing several fractures, according to authorities.
Firefighters held the dog at bay with a fire hose and a fire extinguisher until police arrived a few moments later, officials said.
Edgewater police said an officer was able to secure the dog in the back of his patrol car.
The girl and other victims were taken to local hospitals. All appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
The dog is being held under quarantine at the Edgewater Animal Shelter.
