Father shot after dropping son off at school, family says

Victim described by witnesses as young father

ORLANDO, Fla. – A 32-year-old father was shot Tuesday morning in an Orlando neighborhood just after he dropped his 6-year-old son off at school, according to the victim's family.

The shooting was reported just after 8 a.m. in the 200 block of South Fanfair Avenue, police said.

The man, identified by his family as Dwayne McClendon, was taken to the hospital, and is expected to be OK, family members told News 6.

"They said he was shot in the head but then when we got to the hospital they said he was shot in the butt," said family member Kadashia Allen said. "He was hit in the mouth we don't know if there was fighting or he was defending himself."

The victim's next-door neighbor, who asked not to be identified out of fear of retaliation, spoke to News 6 and said he saw the whole thing happen.

The neighbor described the two shooters as middle-aged men, one light skinned and one darker.

They jumped out of a dark colored vehicle and shot McClendon four or five times in his driveway, the neighbor said.

The shooting happened less than a mile from Ivey Lane Elementary School. Orange County Public School officials said they were not notified about the shooting so the school did not conduct a lockdown.

No arrests have been made.

The shooting is one in a string of recent violence in Orange County. Six people were fatally shot in Orlando in the last two months.

"It's getting to be out of control, it really is," Allen said.
