Grandfather speaks after parents found dead outside car on I-4

Grandparents have custody of couple's 3 children, grandfather says

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – It has been a week since two parents were found dead outside their car on I-4.

The children of Daniel Kelsey, 32, and Heather Kelsey, 30, were inside the SUV when officials found their parents dead. Troopers said they did not find obvious signs of foul play.

Heather Kelsey's parents are now taking care of her children. News 6's Brittany Harris spoke with the children's grandfather, Mike Belisle, who said he and his wife now have custody of the kids, as of Saturday night.

He said they still don't know what exactly happened to the couple because investigators have not yet determined an official cause of death for either of the parents. All they know is that one of them had drugs in his or her system, according to Volusia County deputies.

Belisle said he's just waiting to hear more, but has been taking care of the children since the incident.

"I don't want anybody to ever have to go through what we've gone through. It truly is terrible," Belisle said.

He also said what makes the situation more heartbreaking is that all three of his grandchildren were in the backseat of the car, completely unaware that their parents had died.

"They really don't know. They're kind of looking for mommy right now," he said.

Belisle admitted that raising the children will take a lot of work and cost a lot of money, as they suffer from different conditions such as autism and hyperfocus, but said many people have already stepped up to help. One family friend even set up an online fundraiser for the family.

"We're extremely thankful and overwhelmed by how generous people have been," Belisle said.

He said he appreciates the clothing and food items that have already been donated, but could also use more baby items and monetary donations for the children.
