Investigation ongoing after partially clothed teen found dead in Brevard

Girl was not sexually assaulted or strangled, West Melbourne police say

No description found

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. – The cause of death for a 14-year-old girl found partially clothed in the bathtub of a West Melbourne apartment remains unknown, police said.

The teen, reported as a runaway from South Florida, was found dead Tuesday at an apartment on Northwest Irwin Avenue.

West Melbourne police said officers were called to the home and found the teen unresponsive and partially clothed. Attempts to revive her were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead, officials said.

Police said they received conflicting information at the scene, some of which suggested that the girl had been sexually assaulted and strangled. Preliminary investigative findings, however, did not reveal any evidence of strangulation or sexual assault, police said.

The final cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office.

Police said illegal drugs were found at the home, but it's not known if they played a role in her death.

No charges have been filed in the case, and no one is being sought, police said.

An investigation is ongoing.
