ORLANDO, Fla. – There is more fallout for Orange-Osceola State Attorney Aramis Ayala. The prosecutor said she has now been threatened.
It comes after Ayala announced last month that she would not seek the death penalty in any case.
An investigator with the state attorney's office reported two letters for Ayala came in the mail on two different days, according to an incident report from the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
On March 20, a letter was mailed to Ayala that "appeared to have a racial message," according to a clerk who works in the office.
A similar letter arrived on March 27. It had a postcard "with a hangman's noose in green twine taped to the card," according to the report.
Ayala told investigators she believes the noose was meant as a threat.
The letters started days after Ayala announced on March 16 that she would not seek the death penalty in any case.
Last week she talked during a local radio show about the pushback from her decision.
"I received a noose that was mailed to my office," she said. "I've received several types of derogatory and racist remarks to me personally and professionally."
The racist remarks have also come on social media. In one message that calls her a derogatory remark, the writer drops an F-bomb and calls her an "inbred snowflake" and "a hood rat."
When attorney Benjamin Crump, who represented Trayvon Martin's parents, posted a video on YouTube supporting Ayala, someone commented, calling her a racial slur, and then said she should pick cotton for the rest of her life and be whipped.
Ayala has said publicly she is not backing down from her position.
"If I will buckle because of a threat, the threats will continue," she said.
Ayala considers the noose "a threat to a public servant." She said in the report she is willing to prosecute the person who sent it.
