Gunman fires at Volusia deputy responding to complaint near Lake Helen

The search is on for a gunman after a Volusia County Sheriff's Office deputy was shot at Sunday night near Lake Helen.

The sheriff's office said the deputy was on foot responding to a complaint of trespassing in a wooded area in the 2000 block of East Kicklighter Road near Sand Crane when he was fired upon.

The area is known to law enforcement as a place where people trespass on a regular basis.

Deputies said the officer fired back, but it's unknown if the gunman was shot.

The sheriff's office said units were dispatched to the area to assist in the search.
