Inmate van fire, rollover crash snarl I-95 traffic in Brevard

Drivers asked to use alternate route

A person was entrapped during a rollover crash on I-95 in Brevard County shortly before 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 11.

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A bus with 44 Brevard County inmates on board caught fire Friday morning on Interstate 95 hours before a separate crash in the same area, according to fire rescue officials.

The bus fire happened near mile marker 201 at 7:28  a.m.

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office said the bus had a mechanical issue that caused it to catch fire. The flames were extinguished by 8 a.m. A second bus was used to transport the inmates who had been on the first bus.

Multiple Brevard County Fire Rescue units responded to the scene and medically evaluated the prisoners.

There was also a rollover crash on I-95 North near mile marker 206 shortly before 10 a.m. Traffic was slowed as a result of that crash and drivers were asked to use an alternate route.

Fire Rescue said a person was trapped in the vehicle that rolled over.
