SUMMERFIELD, Fla. – A man shot and killed a home intruder late Monday night in Marion County, deputies said.
The fatal shooting was reported at 10:30 p.m. at a house on SE 158th Place in Summerfield.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the home in connection with an armed home invasion.
The victim said that he was about to go to bed when four masked people entered his home and injured his dog.
Deputies said the victim barricaded himself in a room, but the intruder tried to enter.
"I just heard my back door get kicked in and next thing I know, my dog ran out and I heard a gun shot," the victim said. "And the next thing I know, a guy was meeting me at my door with a gun, stuck the gun in my door. I slammed the door and the gun just started going off."
The victim said he then shot the intruder, who fled the scene, according to the Sheriff's Office.
"My girlfriend was at the closet at the time and I yelled at her. I said, 'Throw me my shotgun.' She threw the shotgun at me like in the movies and I caught and I fired one time, and I guess it hit the guy in the chest or whatever," the victim said.
The intruder was dropped off outside the Ocala Health Summerfield Emergency Room, where he was later pronounced dead, deputies said. He was identified Wednesday as Shawn King, 32.
Deputies didn't say if the resident suffered any injuries, but he told News 6 he was not shot during the invasion.
"I was putting speakers in front of the doors and they were shooting around me like that. I don't know how I didn't get shot," he said.
Zeus, the man's dog, is recovering after being shot in the head during the invasion, the homeowner said.
The man said he has to find a new place to live.
"Now I have to move out of my house. My girl, my roommate, they won't even come here," the victim said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Marion County at 352-368-STOP.
An investigation is continuing.
