TITUSVILLE, Fla. – Titusville police continue to investigate a fatal shooting that took place in a residential neighborhood Monday night.
Stephen Ellis Murphy, 28, of Cocoa, was identified as the man killed in gunfire after police responded to reports of shots coming from the area of Palmetto Street and Robbins Avenue about 7:45 p.m. The 911 caller told dispatchers she heard about 20 shots coming from what sounded like an automatic weapon, according to reports. The caller said it sounded like a drive-by, News 6 partner Florida Today reported.
At least two others called 911 in reference to gunshots heard in the area. The reported shots ranged from 20 to three or four rounds heard.
About 7:55 p.m., a caller told dispatchers she could see a body laying in a field west of the intersection of Palmetto Street and Robbins Avenue.
When units arrived on scene, they saw Murphy had suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died about 8:35 p.m., according to police.
Titusville police, along with deputies with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, secured about a three-block radius along Palmetto street in search for the suspected shooter, who had fled the scene.
No information was immediately available on the motive of the shooting.
As of Tuesday morning, the suspect had not been located by police.
